North Carolina Junior Rankings Explanation

Boys rankings

Girls rankings

Who can earn points?

Junior golfers 18 and under who have not started college and who are legal residents of North Carolina.

How deep in the field are points awarded?

The top 1/3 of the players that actually start a rankings event will be awarded points, with a maximum of 20 places, unless otherwise stated.

Do you have to be a member of TYGA to earn rankings points?

No, players are added to the rankings automatically after they earn points.

Do all divisions receive points?

No, only the players who play from the longest yardage are awarded rankings points.

What if two or more divisions play from the longest yardage set of tee?

Then the divisions are merged into one overall division and points are then awarded for the overall and not the divisions.

What do the rankings reflect?

How well individual players have fared in the PAST 12 MONTHS in selected tournaments, unless they have graduated from high school, then they are deleted the September after they graduate from high school.

Is there a minimum amount of contestants in an event to be used for rankings?

Yes, there must be at least 5 players in the 14-18 division before the results can be used.

Can players "play up" a division to earn points?

That is up to the tournament committee for each rankings event, but players under 14 playing up can not be counted to reach the minimum player rule.  TYGA and the CGA do not allow players to "play up" a division in their events.

What tournaments are used?

National events of note and many regional association events.

Why only individual events?

We do not use Four-Ball or team score events because results do not reflect the contribution of two players in all cases. In some cases, one player may "carry" the other.

How does it work?

When an event result is received or retrieved by our office, the results from the previous year event is deleted from the system and the new results are added in.

Is it updated daily?

No. They are updated by the 5th of each month, unless otherwise noted.

What about mistakes?

Unless catastrophic errors are found, mistakes are fixed for the next update.

How are they computed?

1st.    25 points

2nd.   20 points

3rd.   16 points

4th.   13 points

5th.   10 points

6th - 10th  5 points

11th - 20th.  3 points

The corresponding points are multiplied by the "event multiplier". The event multiplier gives us the chance to give bigger events more points, etc.

Example: Bill finishes 4th in the CGA Junior (an 8 multiplier event). He played the previous year and was 15th. His 15th in 2002 (3 points X 8 = 24) is removed and replaced with his 4th place finish (13 X 8 = 104) in the rankings.

What about ties?

They are split, unless a playoff is held and then the playoff determines the finish. A two-way tie for 10th in the CGA Junior would be worth 32 points. (4 X 8) The five points for tenth is added to the three for 11 and averaged, then multiplied by the event multiplier. If a player has a two-way tie for fifth and only five spots are given points, the 10 points for fifth is halved and multiplied.

Can an event get a bigger multiplier or more spots?

Yes, but unless a mistake has been made, only for the next season. We do not, except in rare cases, change the schedule or the points in mid-season.

Can the multiplier and the amount of players awarded points be adjusted after the competition?

While each event is judged on the previous years field,  the rankings committee reserves the right to adjust the multiplier and the amount of players who are awarded points.  This may be done if the field is small, or the depth of the field is not as deep as it was in the past.

Do you add events in mid-season?

Sometimes. It depends on the event and the reason for adding it.

Who decides what events and how many points are given?

The Tarheel Youth Golf Association Rankings Committee.

Is there a maximum or minimum yardage to be played from?

No.  We do recommend that the boys play a yardage around 6700 yards and girls play a yardage around 5500 yards.

Are juniors who have graduated from high school deleted?

Yes, juniors who have graduated are deleted in the September rankings after they have graduated from high school.

What are "bonus points"?

Bonus points are awarded to the players who qualify for the any event with a multiplier of 9 or higher.  An event with a multiplier of 9 or higher are the top junior tournaments in the country and the players are awarded for competing in such an event.  50 bonus points will be awarded to each player who begins a 9 multiplier event and 100 bonus points will be awarded to each player who begins a 10 multiplier event.
